Why to serve?1 Peter 2:5 “ you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood , offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ” 1 Peter 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood , a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Revelation 5:10 You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth." Revelation . 5:10 “And has made us unto our God kings and priests and we shall reign on the earth “ KJV By reading these verses from God’s Word, we understand that we are a royal priesthood; we became kings and priests to serve our God.
What was the job of the priest? The prelist in the Old Testament was supposed to go to the temple to serve not to watch what others are doing. He used to offer sacrifices and take care of the temple. If we want to see what kind of sacrifice we should offer let us read what the Bible teaches us: Romans 12:1 “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship”. As children of God, we should always remember that we are here as priests, we are royal by adoption, the King of Kings and Lord of Lord has adopted us as His Children through the Redemptive work of Jesus Christ. So serving God should be natural to us as children of God. Why should we serve God?1- God deserves to be served; He is a wonderful and loving giving and caring God, so when we think how much He has given unto us, our response will be: What can I do to serve you Lord. One day we will arrive to heaven, I think when we see how many wonderful things God has prepared for us in heaven , I think we will regret that we did not do more for the Lord on earth. 2- God is counting on us to do the work: The Great Commission in Matthew 28: 18-20 and in Mark 16:15 was given to us, not to the angels, it is our duty to spread the Good News of His love and salvation. We are in days where reaching people is becoming easier day after day, let us use our time wisely and stop wasting our lives. 4- God gave each one of us at least one gift to serve: Sometimes when we do not want to serve in a certain ministry, we say it is not my spiritual gift, it sounds more spiritual than saying I am not going to do this ministry. You try to ease your conscience by justifying your laziness and carelessness by saying that you do not have any Spiritual gift. But be careful, by not serving the Lord you are really saying God doesn’t deserve my time and energy. I believe God sees the need for children ministry in the church, and He gave enough people the gift of teaching, but why in our churches it is hard to fine teachers? Is it lack of gifts? Let us look in our hearts and see? What talents are we burying? Jesus will ask you one day: What did you do with the talents that I have given to you. Do you love to hear him saying: In Matthew 25:23 `Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!' If you love to hear these words from the Lord Jesus, then use the gifts that He has given you. 5- God expects us to serve Him. Luke 27 :35 We read about the sinner woman who came to Jesus , broke her alabaster Jar, and wiped his feet with her hair,, when Simon complained at the woman, Jesus in Luke 7 : 44 said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. So Jesus accepted the service from the woman, and he blamed Simon for his carelessness toward serving him as a guest. 6- If you want to be happy serve God: From my own experience I learned this lesson: There is no better source of joy than serving God. One time I received a letter from a dear young woman , she has been taking care of her family and new baby, so she stopped going to church as she felt overwhelmed with house duties. In her letter she expressed her depression, I told her that she should go back to church, find other believers and be in fellowship with them, to go back to help in Sunday School. I told her to call at least one person who is in need, and try to find a lonely person and comfort her. This dear young woman, sent me a letter after she started helping other, I couldn’t believe that this is the same person who wrote the first letter, she become very happy and satisfied. Make sure that you serve the Lord, honor God in what you do, life is too short to waste. Dr. Thana Jarjour Moussa
